Dawn Spinella has found success both in front of and behind the camera, as well as on the page, winning multiple awards in all three areas.
Dawn’s first biographical screenplay, Mary & The Moon, won the prestigious Alfred P. Sloan Science Screenwriting Award, leading to a writer-for-hire on bio-pic projects and igniting her passion for transformative storytelling. Her pilot When Men were Gods scored a nod for a student Humanitas award. Her short Smashed was a winning script with Women in Media’s Camaraderie Initiative where it was produced by major industry organizations and her pilot GI Jane was a finalist in the Blacklist/Women in Film pilot competition.
Dawn has shared her screenplay passion at the University of the Pacific and UCLA, and sprinkles her magic dust in workshops tailored for shorts, features, and TV formats. Under her wing, students thrive, consistently bagging awards and showcasing their films on a global stage while growing radically as writers and filmmakers.
Dawn holds an MFA in Screenwriting, and an MA in Creative Writing, but it’s her time in service as a Broadcast Journalist for the US Army that may offer the most unique material for her writing and explain her success as a producer and director.
